Injury sidelined Choi Ji-Man after joining the San Diego Padres, but what’s his status now?
San Diego manager Bob Melvin gave an update on Choi, saying he is “still a long way off” from returning to the field against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri.
Choi, who was placed on the disabled list with a left rib cage strain, is currently traveling to Arizona to continue his rehabilitation.
Melvin said, “He’s working on soft tosses and other batting practice. I don’t know when he’ll be able to take live batting,” Melvin said.
Choi, who was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates at the trade deadline, has appeared in seven games for his new team, going 0-for-11 with five walks and three strikeouts. He hasn’t played since April 12 against Arizona.
After Choi, the Padres lost Jake Cronenwirth to a fractured left arm, leaving them with a thin first base depth chart.

In his last 13 games, Cooper is batting .385 (15-for-39) with one home run and five RBIs. He also went 3-for-3 in the first game of the series against St. Louis the day before.
“He’s been getting more productive as time goes on,” Melvin said of the youngster.
Against left-hander Zack Thompson, San Diego will send out a lineup of Ha-Sung Kim (second base), Juan Soto (left field), Manny Machado (designated hitter), Fernando Tatis Jr. (right field), Xander Bogaerts (shortstop), Garrett Cooper (first base), Luis Camposano (catcher), Matthew Barten (third base), and Jose Azocar (center field).
“It’s not easy to come out and play after sitting out for so long,” Melvin said of Azocca’s first start. We tried to give him as good a matchup as we could.”
