What was it like to watch a fitness test from the sidelines?
On the 1st, Suwon KT convened its squad to begin preparations for the upcoming season. The players were put through a basic fitness test to determine their current physical condition. The tests included body circumference measurement, flexibility, push-ups, max vertical jump, sprinting, and squats.
The first place in push-ups went to Park Sun-woong, who did 65, and the first place in vertical jump went to Lee Doo-won, who had a good height of 204.4 centimeters. Overall, the youngsters were in good shape, and Han Hee-won also received a good report card.
Coach Kim Young-hwan, who joined the coaching staff in May after retiring at the end of last season, also watched. Last year, he participated in the physical fitness test as a player, but this year, he watched the team from the sidelines. He said that while his body felt easy, his head was complicated.
“I watched them from the sidelines, thinking they were having a hard time (laughs). This time, I felt relaxed. Previously, I was in the position of being tested the same after the vacation, so I was under pressure and focused only on my physical condition. When I was coaching, I had a different perspective. I saw the whole team’s physical condition. I thought to myself, “Who’s in good shape, who’s got a problem,” he laughs.안전놀이터
When asked who he thought was in good shape, Coach Kim Young-hwan said, “I think the younger players have been building their bodies well. If you overdo it during the building process, injuries can occur. I was worried about injuries even though I was looking positively at the parts of my body that I had built well. My body was easy, but my head was complicated. I think I thought a lot more (laughs).”
Coach Kim didn’t need time to adjust to KT, but he did need to adjust to the job of being a coach. “I’m adjusting well,” he said. I joined the team in May, and I’ve been doing a lot of things like researching foreign players and watching videos. I’m thinking about what the players want and studying basketball,” he said.
