The Cubs took a 6-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning, but their defense let them down in the bottom of the sixth, and a crucial error in the eighth allowed them to tie the game 6-7.
In the end, the Cubs couldn’t overcome two runs in the eighth inning after a crucial error and lost 6-7. The Cubs are now 0.5 games out of the fourth wild card spot.

The error came in the eighth inning. The Cubs had runners on second and third with two walks and a wild pitch, but Drew Smyly induced a routine infield fly to Sean Murphy.
However, right fielder Seiya Suzuki lost the ball in the outfield. Center fielder Cody Bellinger immediately scooped it up and threw it away, but couldn’t prevent the two runners from crossing the plate.
Murphy’s hit could have easily been handled by either center or right field. Suzuki called it, and Bellinger backed off slightly. But the ball sailed past Suzuki’s glove.

The Cubs were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth and suffered a heartbreaking 6-7 loss. Suzuki struck out in the ninth inning.
Smiley induced a routine fly ball to Murphy to at least record a hold, but Suzuki’s error cost him the blown save and the loss.
The Cubs will now host Atlanta on the 28th and 29th before returning home for a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers on the 30th through October 2nd.
If the Cubs miss the postseason by a half-game or even a game, Suzuki’s error will be remembered fondly.
