Kershaw met with reporters at the club’s training facility Camelback Ranch Glendale in Glendale, Arizona, on the 9th (Korea time) to explain how he felt about renewing his contract and the background of his shoulder surgery.
After undergoing surgery in November last year to treat ligaments and shoulder capsules that connect the left shoulder joint and humerus, he said, “Once I decided to operate, the process to play as a player again began,” adding, “I decided to operate to continue my active career.”
It wasn’t an easy choice. “I’ve never made a big decision in my life. I played for the Dodgers all the time and got married with my high school girlfriend. I’ve never made a decision by choosing something. This was the first important choice in my life,” he said about how difficult it was to choose one.
“It wasn’t easy, but now I feel very good. I’m grateful to be here again,” he continued.
“Last year’s ending was not fun at all,” he said after failing to block the first inning of the Division Series last season. There were many doubts. The more I found out, the more it became clear that surgery was needed. It was a tough road, but Dr. Elatache performed a really good surgery. I’m already excited to throw at Dodger Stadium again,” he said, vowing to make a comeback.
“I can’t say when I’ll return, but I’m thinking about returning in July or August,” he said, adding that he is currently in his second week of pitching training after taking a three-month break after surgery.
“I am grateful to the Dodgers for giving me time to sort things out. Once I decided to come back, everyone did a great job,” he said, expressing gratitude to the Dodgers.
“Honestly, I feel a little free and comfortable because I don’t think I need to prepare for the opening,” he said after returning to his home in Texas for the time being, and said he plans to focus on rehabilitation without any pressure.
What will Kershaw look like after recovering from shoulder surgery? When asked about this, he said, “I expect him to show good performance. I want to contribute to the team by focusing on each and every ball. There is no concession when it comes to expectations. I am looking forward to seeing good performances.”
Kershaw is said to have agonized over three crossroads: his original team, the Dodgers, his hometown team, the Texas Rangers, and his active retirement.
When asked about his thoughts on Rangers, he said, “I think it’s a good group. I have respect for them. They won last season and they are a good team. They are doing well, obviously,” showing respect.
