The son of ‘Hercules’ Shim Jung-soo is challenging for the major leagues. He’s even attracting attention.
The MLB office held the first day of the Draft Combine on July 21 (KST) at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
MLB.com highlighted Jong-hyun Shim (21-Kevin Shim), the second son of Jung-soo Shim, in its Draft Combine feature. The combine is a showcase for draft-eligible prospects to show off their talents in front of scouts from 30 teams.
Sim, a junior at the University of San Diego, was named one of the top seven standouts of the day by the media. His average bat speed of 101.5 miles per hour (163 kilometers per hour) ranked first overall among hitters. He is already a highly touted player, ranked 191st overall on MLB.com’s list of top draft prospects.
He has an imposing physique, standing 6’2″ (approx. 1.89m) tall and weighing 210 pounds (approx. 95.3kg). Shim is listed as an outfielder and first baseman (OF/1B). He is known to play first, third, and corner outfield positions.
According to the media, “Shim earned the nickname “Hercules” after hitting 328 home runs in the KBO, and that power has been passed down to his son. Kevin Shim’s average bat speed of 101.5 mph is the highest in the game, and 16 of his 19 batted balls were hard hits (over 95 mph).
Shim was born in 2002 in Daegu, South Korea. His family immigrated to the United States when he was 7 years old and he grew up playing baseball in the United States.
He was highly touted in high school, where he was named to the All-American Academic Team for four consecutive years from 2017-2020. Last year, as a sophomore at the University of San Diego, he was named to the first team of his collegiate baseball region (West Coast Conference (WCC)) after batting .292 (66-for-226) with 12 home runs, 57 RBIs, and a .914 OPS.
This year has been a slight dip from last year. He’s batting 23-for-9 with six doubles, six home runs, 21 RBIs, and an OPS of .846. However, he has the potential to play in the major leagues with his power, delivery, and quickness.
Previously, Shim’s first son, Shim Jong-won (26), tried out for the 2021 KBO Draft. He prepared for the tryout by playing for the Yeoncheon Miracle in the independent league, but was not selected and joined the military.카지노
