The talent that Oh Seung-hwan inherited from No. 21 was ‘perfectly deleted’ in the second ⅓…lead Samsung to victory

The talent that the Samsung Lions paid attention to is starting to shine.

Samsung pitcher Choi Ji-kwang pitched as a relief pitcher in the second game of the three consecutive games during the week against the LG Twins in the “2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League” held at Samsung Lions Park in Daegu on Sunday. He pitched in two ⅓ without a hit, one strikeout, and four walks, helping his team win 5-4. At the same time, he became the winning pitcher and secured his first win of this season.

Choi took over the baton of relief pitcher Yang Hyun with two outs and a runner on first base in the top of the fifth inning when Samsung was losing 2-3. Choi got off to a strong start, striking out three strikeouts against the tricky first batter Park Hae-min.

Choi Ji-kwang continued to throw powerful pitches. In the top of the sixth inning, he blocked ninth batter Shin Min-jae and leadoff Hong Chang-ki with fly balls to left field, and grounded out to Moon Sung-joo to end the inning. In the top of the seventh inning, Choi also took the mound and blocked Kim with a ground ball to the first base, and did his part by catching Austin Dean with a ground ball to the second base and Park Dong-won with a ground ball to the third base.

Samsung left the mound early after starting pitcher Lee Seung-min allowed four runs in three ⅔ innings. Choi Ji-kwang then worked as a long relief pitcher to pave the way for his team’s victory. The team successfully came from behind to win the game 5-4, with Koo’s solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning and Koo’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Samsung manager Park Jin-man gave a thumbs up after the game, saying, “Choi Ji-kwang showed good pitching in the middle and threw well.”

Choi Ji-kwang is a pitcher that Samsung has high expectations for. After graduating from Busan High School, he had so much potential that he was drafted ninth overall in the second round of the 2017 KBO League Rookie Draft. He was so interesting that he inherited Oh Seung-hwan’s No. 21 that he left the team for overseas expansion from his first year.

Choi Ji-kwang, who improved gradually by refining his talent, got off to a strong start to the 2024 season, but suffered a break after injuring his right back muscle during the spring camp. After rehabilitation, Choi improved his physical condition and returned to the first team on last Friday after playing in the Futures League last month.

So far, he has an earned run average of 1.80 for one win and five innings in three games. Since joining the primary league, he has been gradually finding his pace and energizing the Samsung bullpen. His overall performance is 14 wins and 14 losses, 40 holds two saves and an earned run average of 5.04 in 219 ⅔ innings in 216 games.

After the game, Choi Ji-kwang said, “I am currently in the best physical condition to play baseball because I paid a lot of attention in the training part. I wanted to come to the first team as soon as possible because the team’s performance was good, but I prepared well so that I didn’t get in a hurry as much as possible.”

“I think it is my role to take responsibility for as many innings as possible without giving as much score as I can today (on the 12th). It was a game where I was able to do what I could best in my position. Rather than me throwing well, I think (former) Ja-wook’s hit resulted in a good result, so I am grateful to Ja-wook,” he said.

Samsung has high-quality bullpen pitcher lineup, including veteran Oh Seung-hwan, Kim Jae-yoon and Lim Chang-min. Nevertheless, it is clear that the more good relief pitchers there are, the more they contribute to the team’s strength. How will Choi Ji-kwang, who is taking his place in the bullpen, affect Samsung’s upturn this year.
