The Doosan Bears said on Wednesday that it will host Nippert’s retirement ceremony at the KT Wiz match at Jamsil Stadium on Wednesday. Nippert played for Doosan from 2011 to 2017 and KT from 2018. He recorded 102 wins, 51 losses and one hold, 3.59 ERA, and 1,082 strikeouts in 214 KBO league games over the past eight years. He remains the longest-serving foreign player in history and the only one to achieve 100 wins and 1,000 strikeouts.
Before coming to the KBO League, Nippert played in 119 games during six seasons (2005-2010) in the U.S. Major League Baseball (MLB), recording 14 wins (16 losses) and an ERA of 5.31 after the end of the 2010 season, but no MLB team was looking for him. Eventually, he signed a contract with Doosan. In 2011, when he was making his KBO League debut, he created a sensation with his outstanding performance of 15 wins (six losses) and an ERA of 2.55. He led his team’s heyday by taking the mound for seven years. With Nippert at the forefront, Doosan won the Korean Series four times (2013-2015-2017) and two titles (2015-2016). Nippert won the MVP award and the Golden Glove award by winning the most wins (22-3), the ERA (2.95), and the winning percentage (0.880) in the 2016 season.
Nippert moved to KT in the 2018 season and retired that year with eight wins (eight losses) and a 4.25 ERA in 29 games. “We tried to hold a retirement ceremony in the 2020 opening game, but it was canceled due to COVID-19 and it finally happened,” a Doosan official said.
Having earned the nickname of “Niseobang” after marrying a Korean woman in early 2016, Nippert is staying in Korea even after his retirement. He runs the “Big Dream Youth Baseball Team” and appears in various TV programs including “The Greatest Baseball League.” Nippert was loved by Doosan fans so much that he was called “Nise (Nieppert + God)” with his hard work and passion for baseball. “It is an honor to be on the mound at Jamsil Stadium in seven years wearing Doosan’s uniform. I sincerely thank Doosan for allowing me to participate in the big event. I will continue to do my best to remember him as a good image to fans.”
