I wanted to throw it against a strong team without any regrets”….Lee Ho-sung, who played as an alternative starter and led Samsung to its fourth consecutive victory, said a sluggish word

“I wanted to throw it against a strong team without any regrets.”

There was a bold mindset behind the background that “alternative starter” Lee Ho-sung (Samsung Lions) was able to play well.메이저놀이터

Lee Ho-sung took the mound as Samsung’s starting pitcher in the 2024 professional baseball KBO League regular season home game against the LG Twins at Samsung Lions Park in Daegu on the 13th.

From the beginning, Lee showed off his top form. Although he was hit to the right by Hong Chang-ki in the top of the first inning, he led all of Moon Seong-joo (left fielder fly), Kim Hyun-soo (three strikeouts) and Austin Dean (strikes to the shortstop) to poor batting. In the top of the second inning, he struck out Moon Bo-kyung and Park Dong-won in succession, and tied Koo Bon-hyuk with a fly to center field to complete his first three-out inning.

He continued to feel stable at the top of the third inning. He grounded out to the second base to block Park Hae-min. Shin committed a walk, but he caught Hong Chang-ki (grounded to the second base) and Moon Sung-joo (grounded to the first base) in turn.

His first loss came in the top of the fourth inning. With runners on the second and third bases with no outs and no outs, Kim Hyun-soo’s hit to the right field and Austin’s double to the left-center field, he gave up sacrifice flies to Moon Bo-kyung and Park Dong-won in succession. Fortunately, he induced Koo Bon-hyuk to fly to the center field, and he did not falter anymore.

The top of the fifth inning was neat. He calmly increased his out count against Park Hae-min (grounded by second baseman), Shin Min-jae (second baseman fly), and Hong Chang-ki (grounded by second baseman).

After taking the mound in the top of the sixth inning, Lee led Moon to a grounder to the second base and committed a walk to Kim Hyun-soo. Then, Samsung’s bench replaced Kim Dae-woo as pitcher. As Kim Dae-woo did not yield a home run to Kim, Lee’s earned run did not increase.

The final score was 5.1 innings, three hits, two walks, three strikeouts and two runs. While spraying a total of 81 pitches, he used sliders (36 pitches), and mixed fastballs (26 pitches), curveballs (11), and changeups (8 pitches). The maximum speed of fastballs was measured up to 146 kilometers.

In addition to Lee Ho-seong’s strong pitching, Samsung Lions defeated LG 6-3 to secure four consecutive wins, including Park Byung-ho (1 hit, one homer, one RBI) and Kang Min-ho (1 hit, one RBI) and Lee Jae-hyun (one hit, one homer, two RBIs) who have achieved 400 home runs in Korea and the U.S. overall. Lee Ho-seong, who garnered his second win in this season, was also able to smile brightly.

After the game, coach Park Jin-man applauded, saying, “Starting Lee Ho-sung threw well and created a situation where the team could lead.”

In particular, Lee Ho-sung’s performance on the day was more stellar because he was the result of making him an “alternative starter.” After being called by Samsung with No. 8 overall in the first round in 2023, Lee recorded one win and 2.65 ERA in five games (17 innings) last year, and competed for the fifth starter ahead of this season, but failed to secure his position. Prior to the LG match, his performance was 1-4, and his ERA was 7.64.

Afterwards, Korean right-handed ace Won Tae-in went down to the second division to rest, and coach Park Jin-man left the position to Lee Ho-sung. Then, he showed his “life struggle” on the day, repaying the coach’s faith. Behind the scenes, he had a bold mindset.

“I wanted to throw the ball against a strong team without regrets. For some reason, if I fail to throw my ball today, I would regret it even more,” Lee Ho-seong said with a bright smile. “Even if I get a hit, I tried not to give a walk and to pitch aggressively. I think I threw it without regret thanks to (catcher) Min-ho’s good lead and fielders’ help in defense.”

“Before going up to the sixth inning, the coach asked me not to think that I was blocking it until the end, but to throw it with all my might, thinking that the first pitch and the first pitch were the last,” he said. “I’m sorry that I couldn’t finish the inning, but I think I played a role as a starting pitcher.”

Casey Kelly (eight hits, three homers, five strikeouts and six runs in eight innings), who started the game for LG, failed to avoid many runs, but pitched completely to prevent the bullpen from being consumed. Through this, Lee Ho-sung gained another realization.

“When I came down from the mound, I was surprised by the number of pitches that my opponent pitched. I lost more runs than I did, but I managed to manage long innings,” Lee Ho-seong said. “I thought it was important for a starting pitcher to manage long innings.” Samsung has another good starting resource.
