South Korea will depart through Gimhae International Airport to participate in the 13th Asian Youth Baseball Championship to be held in Taipei, Taiwan on the 31st. South Korea is in Group A with Taiwan, Thailand, and Pakistan. Starting with the match against Taiwan on Sept. 2, the group qualifiers will be held, and the teams will compete for places up to the second place in each group. Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka were in Group B.
Korea has gathered in Busan since the 22nd to begin strengthening training. They strengthened their organizational skills by playing practice games with Busan National University of Science and Technology, the NC Dinos Futures team, the KBSA League All-Star team, and the Lotte Giants Futures team. Coach Park Gye-won, who checked the players himself, said, “There were no injured players, and our teamwork was good when we played practice games. I thought I would get pushed back if I played against the second-tier players, but the players did so well. The pitchers were stable and the batters were in good condition.”
The national team has a large number of promising players who represent high school baseball. The team has eight pitchers including Jeong Hyeon-woo and Kim Tae-hyung (Duck High School), Jeong Woo-joo and Lee Ho-min (Jeon High School), Bae Chan-seung (Daegu High School), Kim Dong-hyun (Seoul High School), Kim Seo-jin (Chunghoon High School), and Park Geon-woo (Chungam High School). The infielders will be guarded by Park Joon-soon and Bae Seung-soo (Duck High School), Yeom Seung-won (Hwi Bookstore), Shim Jae-hoon (Yoo Shin-go), and Park Jae-hyun (Incheon High School). The outfielders will be assigned to Soo-ho (Daegu Sangwon High School), Lee Won-joon (Busan High School), and Oh Jae-won (Yoo Shin-go). Lee Yul-ye (Gangneung High School) and Park Jae-yeop (Busan High School) have been selected as catchers.
The coaching staff consisted of head coach Park Gye-won, head coach Kang Seung-young (manager at the Korea Water Bank), pitcher coach Song Min-soo (manager at Jang Chung-go), and battery coach Chung Ho-jin (manager at the Yongsan Margo).
Chung Hyeon-woo (Deoksu High School) and Chung Woo-joo (Jeonju High School), who are the top contenders in the draft, will form a one-two punch. Both Chung and Chung have maintained their conditions by not taking the mound at the presidential cup competition before joining the national team. “Jung and Jung are in good condition. Chung has prepared well. His speed reached up to 150 kilometers. Jung Woo-joo has good pace. We plan to run the mound centering on them,” coach Park Gye-won said.
Coach Park Kye-won was most wary of Taiwan and Japan. In the match against Taiwan, the first team to qualify for the group qualifying round, coach Park Kye-won said, “Up to the second place in each group will be given the right to advance to the next round. Therefore, the first match against Taiwan will be important. I’m sure there will be home advantage as well. I think we need to be careful about that. If we reach the Super Round, we should also make all-out efforts against Japan.”
He also urged the players to take pride in the national flag. “I am participating in competitions on behalf of my country. Players need to know the weight of tag marks. I told them not to act lightly. They should act carefully so that they can set an example anywhere,” Park said.
Korea achieved its fifth career championship by winning the Miyazaki event in Japan in 2018. Korea, led by coach Park Kye-won, will take on its sixth attempt to become the top of Asia.
