Director Lee Sung-yong’s “Chok” hit again this time… but failed to secure victory

Lee Sung-yong, manager of SSG Landers, hit only half of the time. Foreign pitcher Drew Anderson pitched well, but failed to secure victory due to lack of performance by the batters.스포츠토토

SSG drew 1-1 in the 12th inning in Game 14 between the teams against the Lotte Giants in the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League at Sajik Baseball Stadium in Busan on the 7th.

With the draw, SSG had 60 wins, 67 losses and two draws for this season, and maintained its seventh place by 0.5 games ahead of eighth-ranked Lotte Giants (57 wins, 65 losses and four draws). It is three games behind fifth-ranked KT Wiz (64 wins, 65 losses and two draws).

In SSG, Anderson allowed four hits, two walks and five strikeouts during six innings. He displayed a combination of a powerful fastball with a maximum speed of 154 kilometers and a cut fastball that boosted the speed to 144 kilometers. He threw various breaking balls including curveball, slider and change-up.

Anderson was expected to display good pitching even before the game. Anderson had a 0.69 ERA with one win and no loss in two showdowns with Lotte in the 2024 season. On July 11, he blocked Lotte’s batters with two hits and two walks in six ⅔ innings, three hits and three walks, and 10 strikeouts in six ⅓ innings on August 1.

Manager Lee Sung-yong expected a good pitch as Anderson had enough rest for six days, although he was sluggish with four hits, one homer, two walks, six strikeouts and seven runs (six earned) in four ⅓ innings against the NC Dinos on the 31st of last month.

“I don’t know what my intuition will be like, but I have a feeling that Anderson will throw well,” coach Lee Soo-yong said in an official interview before the game. “I think we can play a good game if our team’s batting is revived a little bit. I remember my intuition hitting me well in the past in Sajik, but I hope the results will be good again today.”

Manager Lee Soo-yong remembers two prophecies hitting the mark in his resignation on April 24. Choi Jung, who was trying to record the most home runs in the KBO league at the time, and Choo Shin-soo, who was trying to make 2,000 hits combined in the Major League and the KBO League, expressed his “hunch” that he would do it side by side.

At the time, manager Lee’s “chok” was perfect. Choi Jung and Choo Shin-soo had their 467th homerun in total in the KBO and 2,000 hits in their career against Lotte right-hander Lee In-bok, respectively. SSG also had a happy ending by winning 12-7.

However, manager Lee’s strong pitching was only attributed to Anderson’s good pitching. Oryeo’s batters were on the verge of losing the game as they remained scoreless through the eighth inning due to Lotte’s starting pitcher Park Se-woong’s strong pitching.

In the top of the ninth inning, SSG hit Lotte closer Kim Won-joong at the last attack of the regular inning, and finally got off the brink. Choo Shin-soo hit an RBI sacrifice fly with the bases loaded with one out, and brought the game to square one.

SSG tried to turn the tables with momentum, but was satisfied with the tie as Jung Joon-jae stepped down with a fly ball to the left field in the top of the ninth inning with two outs and runners on first and third bases. Ha Jae-hoon was caught with a grounder to the third base in the top of the 11th inning, and Han Yu-sum was caught with a straight hit to the second base with two outs in the top of the 12th inning.
