The Australian daily Illawarra Mercury said on Jan. 22, “Asian athlete Lee Hyun-joong is rapidly emerging as a basketball player who is receiving enthusiastic support from Woolen Gong. If he has the same performance in recent years, he will likely secure far more fans in the future.”

Wollengong is Australia’s third city and home to the Illawarra Hawks. Two days before the local newspaper’s announcement, Lee had 24 points, four rebounds, and one block in the 20th round home game of the 2023-24 NBL.

Illawarra Mercury said, “The Illawarra Hawks shooting sense was as cold as the ice field,” and regretted the 89-96 defeat by the Adelaide Thoroughbreds, but introduced, “Lee Hyun-joong, a scoring wizard from Korea, scored 14 points with a 100% success rate in field throws, including all four three-point shots in the first half.”

Acting U.S. Hawks coach Justin Tatum also praised Lee Hyun-joong, saying, “He did a great job. He did a great job. He knows how to score easily and comfortably. He also gives great energy to the defense.”

When he was an active player, Justin Tatum was named an All-Star of the 2004-05 Dutch Basketball League. “Lee Hyun-joong is a being who can spark off the Illawarra Hawks. Thanks to him (playing games in which he was inferior except in the second quarter), he was able to continue the game (with a margin of less than 10 points).”

Lee Hyun-joong has recorded an average success rate of 17.2 minutes, 7.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, and three points, with accuracy of 41.2 percent, and two points, 57.1 percent during his debut season in the Australian professional basketball league. He has clearly gained 12 points or more in four recent seven games.

Australia is ranked fourth for men and third for women in the FIBA national basketball team. “We hope that Lee Hyun-joong will play a leading role in encouraging the Illawarra Hawks in the rest of the season,” acting coach Justin Tatum said.

Lee Hyun-joong was named one of the best five players in the 2021-22 NCAA Division I A10 Conference by Davidson’s basketball team. His best strength was his 201cm barefoot shooting.

Through the 2020-21 NCAA Basketball First Division, the team achieved 50-40-90 and broke Davidson University’s highest three-point success rate in a single season (44.2%).
